The Ewells consist of Bob, Mayella and seven others. The Ewells are beyond poor and live behind the city's dump. Bob is a single parent, he's unemployed, a drunk and is against colored people. Bob doesn't try to get a job to better him and his kids lifes. Mayella is lonely, unhappy, abused and the oldest out of the eight children. When Bob left one day he asked her to open a chiffarobe but instead of doing it herself she asked Tom Robinson to do for her on his walk home. As a black man Tom had to help Mayella since she was white. As soon as Tom got on a chair Mayella tried to kiss him. Tom wanted to get out of the house as quick as he could butMayella fell on the floor and started to scream. Bob was close to the house and as soon as he heard his daughter scream, he ran inside to find his daughter on the floor beaten and Tom being right by her side. Bob didn't call a doctor to check on his daughter because he thought it was too expensive, there was no need to and he didn't want to get introuble for beating his daughter. Since Tom was black and his daughter was white, Bob took up the opportunity to take Tom to court so he gets introuble instead of himself.
Bob Ewell's story of the case is as follows. " Well I was out choppin wood late that night and when I was coming in I heard Mayella screaming like a hog traped in the house. When I got to the house I found Tom Robinson on top of her." Bob Ewell's story when he told it was poor he feels hatered twords Tom. |
The song Dogs by Pink Floyd describes the Ewells because it talks about being rutheless, and ending up being mistrusted and alone. It also talks about lying to the people who trust you.
